i think they've disabled the function, as i was able to see my five about an hour ago, at which point i emailed the post to a friend. she thought she wasn't doing it right, so i log in as her, am shocked to see nothing, go back to mine, and now i have nothing as well!

theory 3 seems the most likely, as it sounds facebook-y and vaugely confusing. however, one person on my list i haven't looked at their profile or searched for the them in years (literally). i can see her stalking me, but she'd have to really stalk to offset my not looking at her, ever.

Theory 3 seems reasonable, same concept as the whole 'people you might be friends with' thing, but within your friends rather than within your friends' friends.

I think we can clearly eliminate theory 1 based on commenter investigation... the 5 that come up for me are certainly not the people I look at most often, or most recently, and the guy I totally stalk isn't on there (unfortunately)... and, because of this, we should all be resentful of the condescending tone taken by the commenter quoted in said theory. way to be wrong, jerk.

I really want to know for sure... but 3 is pretty facebook-y, so I buy it.

Curious. All five theories are unsatisfying based on my own list of five. I know all five and all are old friends to one degree or another, but there is absolutely no reason why I would have been searching for then or they would be searching for me. Unless this random collection of various friends spend a lot of time mooning over my profile in unlikely ways, I can't see why they would show up on that list.

Based on who comes up in my list, it appears to be "People who may or may not have had an STI when they told you they loved you." Of course, that could just be an NYU-specific glitch.
