The elections in 2000 and 2004 should never have been so close. They looked for the weakness in the voting public and went after it. I think it's great that so many people are showing up for the primaries (I had never had to wait in such a loooong line to vote before!), but uninformed voters who just want to be "on the winning team" are worse than people who don't show up at all and then complain about the state of affairs we are dealing with.

I think there should be a quiz, like for a driver's license, where you at least have to know what the person you are voting for stands for. I mean, geez! Seven percent of West Virginia thought John Edwards was still a contender! *bangs head on desk*

I think he fairly mum, its a lot of his subordinates or supporters who might call the race card or whatever. That's not the same thing, as I think his campaign wants to in general minimize his different-ness and not emphasize it by playing victim. Another example of this is how instances of racist comments and vandalism of Obama offices were not reported widely in the media, by choice of the Obama campaign.

IMO, Obama has shown a willingness in umpteen debates to discuss differences in policy (such as mandates for health care coverage, strategic decisions in Iraq, details of border security and immigration reform, etc.). I think the recent gas tax issues was also substantive for the most part and based on facts, not character assassination.

As for substance, I have listened to Obama's podcasts when he was Senator, some of his speeches before running for office, watched him for several full debates, and have read sections of his website. I don't feel he is superficial and is completely UNLIKE Bush in every sense of the word. He is clearly intelligent, well-spoken, and has good judgment, in my opinion.

Just out of curiosity, those who think he is all style--have you really heard him or read about his policies and still think that?

Every time someone criticizes him on issues though, he calls it smearing, negative campaigning, politics of destruction and distraction, etc. He deflects everything. If you look at the GOP ads, there is actually not a single one that criticizes Obama on a personal level, nor a single one that mentions Wright, or Michelle Obama.

Are there people who are Republicans who have said things that are out of line? Sure. But there are Democrats who have gone below the belt too, with attacks on Cindy McCain's former prescription drug problem, etc. Let's not pretend the Democrats are innocent here. I think it's fair to say that, relatively speaking, Obama and McCain have both run positive campaigns to this point and stayed pretty clear of negative personal attacks.

And why not attack what the actual candidate - Obama - has said?

Maybe because there's nothing easy to attack there. Maybe because his message is so sensible and appealing to voters, his opponents have no choice but to cast around in desperation and find things OTHER people have said to criticize — and then try to make the painfully stretched argument that this should dictate your decision on whether to vote for the guy who didn't say any of these things.
