My opinions wavered in some parts, I felt bad at one point since, as stated by some others, the creature toddled onto the website unknowing of the fact that he'd be instantly subjected to ridicule and thrust into the hall of Internet Infamy. I realized a few posts back that the he really is one of the worst kinds of people, the kind that sets the idea that dating from the internet is a bad thing since you'll only get chauvinistic pigs. Not sure about most women but I'm not turned on at all by the cash fan, it's rather tacky.

In any case, he deserves most of these comments (I'll admit that some of it does seem to have gone a bit overboard but that's how life is nowadays with overkill). There's not much one can do about the comments, however, just live and let live since we're all stubborn mules who are unwilling to waver even an inch from our place in our stall. :)

Admittedly, it is all a bit overblown, but nothing would have come from this if he'd ignored the initial jibe. However, he called in to threaten and got himself recorded. His language didn't help. 30+ pics on a CL ad are tacky, but calling a website to threaten them for making fun of you is douche/guido territory. Especially when you consider the Streisand effect. His taped rant made me think of a Mark Twain quote "It is far better to remain silent and appear a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt".

All I'm sayin' is, I remember when Gawker's purpose was to bring low the high and mighty that ran New York/the media like their own personal playground. The vitriol was directed up the food chain, to people whose weekends (and reputations) were not going to be totally destroyed by a bunch of blog comments. They were subject to ridicule because of their notoriety and insulated from it, to a degree, by their success. That's what made the whole thing fair.

Now, it plucks hapless, un-internet-savvy nobodies from out of obscurity and humiliates them for... what? Not conforming to our standards of hyper-literacy and sarcastic wit? Wearing clothing we find to be in poor taste and speaking in ebonics? What's the point? Ha ha ha, we're better than you?

That just reeks of seventh grade, of validating our own insecurities by picking on targets we know won't be able to defend themselves, and of Gawker becoming one of the media mean girls it was started to keep in check. In a word, pathetic.

Yes the NYC public school system is a disaster but that still isn't an excuse. He has cultivated a certain image that is based sexism and stupidity.

Maybe this mockery will make him realize that he may want to reconsider how he presents himself. Not to mention how he attracts women (money fans? really?). I doubt it. But I think it is perfectly reasonable to call him on it.

Most of the time we allow guys like this to get away with being idiots. It is considered mean (and even worse -- "elitist") to tell them to grow up and behave like a civilized human being.

This kind of behavior is excused and even encouraged. We live in a culture where a president is celebrated for being a "man of the people" because he deliberately mispronounces words and appears to be incapable of stringing together a coherent sentence on his own.

Speaking knowledgably is seen as a form of snobbery. And insisting on people behaving intelligently is seen as elitist.

I appreciate the fact that Gawker is one of the few places where such elitist snobs are allowed to talk back to -- and have at least have as much of a voice as -- douchebag morons.

Young man willfully posts 30-some-odd pictures of himself on the internet, doesn't pause to anticipate potential consequences, and gets undesired attention. Sounds quite in line with the common definition of internet infamy.

I obviously can't speak for everyone, but I personally could give a shit whether the latest in a long line of anonymous, oblivious tools that seem only too willing to make an ass of themselves in a very public forum is rich, poor, black, white, gay, straight -- the adage about playing with fire applies democratically. I don't buy the blanket assertion that the impulse to wail on this kid stems from an inherently prejudiced place -- perhaps it does for those of us that hold Liberal Arts degrees, but you'd have to tell me.

Thing is, this guy, he's just a guy, you know? Trying to get a little bit- and maybe he's misguided, and maybe he doesn't quite fit in the sandbox with the media types here or the IT types there or the lawyer types everywhere who frequent the comment-enabled internet. But from a certain angle, you see it's beautiful.

I would guess- and this is just a guess and makes me feel a bit classist myself, but I observe the culture around my home every day and it's like this- that his boys would do the exact same thing to impress a lady. The flaw in the plan here was posting pictures on the internet, where white people can get their hands on them. And we laugh, and we tell ourselves that he's a douche, or whatever, but when you're living anywhere that the shirt he's wearing in the last picture is considered acceptable attire, the style is such that if you wanna impress anyone you gotta come off like a baller.

A goodly number of video game makers either couldn't afford linguists or translators (or didn't want to dish out the cash for them). Thus we have Cat's stilted "All your base are belong to us", in the beginning of a GENESIS video game which is better forgotten.

To this day, T-shirts can be found printed with the skewed, goofy statement.

Here's my point; maybe we aren't as good at translating as we think we are. Maybe we aren't getting our message across or the message comes through as garbled.

What if "Your people need our foodstuffs" gets snarled into "Stuff our food up your people"?

Think about it.

What if the idiosyncrasies of language lead us to the idiocy of mistranslated good will? What if "Man, that earthquake was a real bitch." translates to "Hillary Clinton just sat on your head."?

How about "Ted Kennedy had a seizure but he's okay." becomes "Ted Kennedy had seized her butt. He's okay!"?

My favorite line in any Japanese monster movie comes from the ADR voice-over of a Japanese professor who describes Godzilla as a 'phe-non-e-mon'. Yeah, he mispronounces it twice. Worth watching the entire film just to hear it.

Of course it works in both directions. Knowing Godzilla was a metaphor for the 'evil' of the nuclear attack on Japan in 1945, all we have to say is "You wanna see Godzilla up close?" and everything is cool.

The kicker with Goulds and Allisons is that visibility afforded by media outlets such as Gawker stokes the fire of their "careers". They make that their game -- they find fame in the cracks between people being bored at work and having tremendous access information at their fingertips. As someone that can't help but bristle with all this Quarterlife, Web 2.0, navel-gazing, Facebook-status-update fuckery that's come to define my generation (heavy quotes) -- and who, by extension, wishes to limit his participation in a process that turns the new rampant self-absorption (along with the ability to string a moderately clever sentence together, of course) into a viable commodity through the casual activity of contributing page views and comments to a blog which generate revenue and thereby prescribe real currency to useless information...it actually sits better on my conscience to have a laugh in helping to turn some unsuspecting kid into a internet celebrity for a day (which unfortunately more often than not seems to make one entertainment of a person's humiliation) than, say, devoting one minute to wading through the novellic testament to the increased value of narcissism that the NYT decided to throw its weight behind this weekend.

God forbid anyone should try to find a date on CL (or Manhunt--what was it, last week that Denton posted barely-censored screen shots of somebody's profile?) or have an article written about them in their college newspaper (Dutchess of Harvard). I'm all for snark when the targets are deserving, and I'll admit I posted a quip on the original post about Mr. Right, so my high horse is looking pretty sickly. But come on, have Lydia Hearst, Julia Allison, Emily Gould, Greg Gutfeld or any of the other people who live and die by the overshare (and actually get off on being Gawker's whipping boys and girls) really done nothing worthy of mockery today? As for commenter culture, I understand what you're saying about the marketplace of ideas, and I used to believe it, but I don't now. Beyond funny comments - which there are plenty of here - there is a rush to polarization on commenting boards that often has little relation in scale or impact with the actual subject at hand. People get crazy when they get on the Internet. There's an immense tear-down impulse that I think has gotten out of hand. It's like people want to differentiate them
