I've never seen someone so talented at saying nothing at all. The key is to sound like you are saying a lot and on a deep level while essentially repeating yourself. Then add a lot of uncomfortable laughter and Voila you have Tom Cruise on Scientology. This man used to be somebody. He used to be a hero, a hottie and women lost themselves over him. Now they look at him like his brain is dribbling out of his ear while lights are flashing on and off inside his head. It's no better for Katie Holmes either who now looks old beyond her years and not in that great sophisticated way but in that sad why are-you-wearing-grandma's-clothes-and-hair kind of way. Does she even know who she is anymore besides Tom Cruise's wife?!?! Alas I don't think she does.

CheekyMonkey76

He's just exalted. And inspired.
I mean, I know how he feels, I've felt the same many times. You feel that way when you've discovered the pot of gold, or what feels like it.
It is a spiritual thing and that's what cults do : they own you through giving you that spiritual feeling and understanding, then making you believe you need them to keep it. You dont. It's a natural thing.
Besides, the exaltation goes away over time.
He is discovering himself, hence the tension.
Once you've known this stuff for a long time, it just goes in the background.
That's a scary group, but Tom is just being exalted and spiritual. His group is dangerous, he's just a useful idiot.
Somewhat dangerous too though, seeing how he helped brainwashing Katie. Sad.

quintal

@ratava00:

Scientology pursues those it considers its foes with uncanny ferocity, but with the steal of secret agencies. There are hundreds of deaths in its wake, and yarns of strings to peg them to the group. Check out " [www.clambake.org]

That's not to say that Tom Cruise is either aware of such incidents, nor that he in any way participates in them. As a celebrity, he's given services away from the rank and file, in a place called, "Celebrity Center," in Hollywood Boulevard.

Furthermore, when you are inside and an "faithful member" you are discouraged from reading what they call, "entheta" which means stories, news, ideas, which in any way cast a shadow of doubt upon the purity of the church. This is written in several documents which you are presented again and again as you get closer and closer to the inner sanctum. When there, you are usually surrounded by groups of congenial, intelligent people, and have not even an urge to consider that these folks are less than what Tom Cruise sees.

Internally, there are what I can compare to castes of various societies, and each rarely mixes with the other. The seekers, like Tom, are likely to encounter only the irresistible bliss he portrays in this video, which is actually quite appropriate for internal use to reinforce the choir's beliefs.

One is oblivious to there being anything wrong until you are in some way touched by personal disaster; at which point you are isolated from the blissful, and the ordeal begins.

If your state of bliss is similar to Tom's you will be invited to join the Sea Org. This is not unlike Nazi Germany, when the world couldn't understand why Germans appeared so happy within the regime. That was simple. Your life is regulated to the extent that only the reality presented to you is real, and there is nearly no exposure to anything outside the confines of their fortresses. It is very difficult to believe otherwise, or you are terrorized into not daring to oppose the leaders. You study what you are told. You only read what they allow to enter the compound. You work in excess of 16 hours a day, seven days a week, with perhaps an occasional day out, which most usually use to do personal things they have no time to do when inside, and if you still have time, you might want to catch a movie which should end in time to report back to duty, lest you be found AWAL.

You wear their prescribed uniform, and your family is junior in importance to the Org.

You wonder why people are attracted in the first place? In people's eternal quest for self actualization they will seek high and wide, and when something seems to click, they take the hook, and get drawn in.

The idea of being and becoming better is not new to anyone. Only your background can suggest whether you will be attracted to Scientology, or the Moonies, join the Marines to be all that you can be, or support Bush as the anointed Prophet of God on a mission against the infidel. When there are enough of the same type of people around you, it is difficult to believe there is another reality.

The Scientology allure is mystical. Their more attractive mysticism reads like ancient Egyptian books, or like the Vedas, or like Lao Zi's the Tao, or the Kabbala, or the Bible, or Koran's, or the Wuli Masters, and no doubt much of it was taken therefrom, and many others.

A lot of these mystical philosophies directly or indirectly tend to direct you towards the realization that reality is irrevocably subject to your perceptions, and beyond that there is conjecture, or science, or mysticism. It's what attracted me after my personal five years in a Franciscan monastery, exposed to the mystical stories of Saint Francis. I was ripe for the first idea that sounded like it provided a way to reach the heights that Saint Francis reached.

There is nothing wrong with "creating and living your own reality," if it can give you the peace and bliss and wisdom you seek. But most of us seem unable to deny that there are others around us with yet their own realities, and if one is to interface with them, there have to has to be a meeting ground of common reality!

Tom, being a celebrity is not only sheltered when he goes to the church, but surely also in his life as a celebrity and probably hasn't a clue that what he has come to hold as reality, is quite distant from the common ground on the street.

As an actor, he has experienced that he has to create and believe in the character's reality for a scene to come across as genuine. This experience is so profound that it is impossible not to question conventional reality.

That very thirst for the truth is accompanied by the greed of instant requite which allows you to believe that if you are in it, it must be the right way.

Let me end with the discovery of the deception with an interesting anecdote of greed. I was once at a gas station after midnight, and a youth approached me offering me a video player for $100 when the market price was around $700. My greed got the best of me, and even my suspicion didn't save me from walking into the trap, until I had released the money to the con-youth, and at that instance I was overcome with the realization that I had just been had!

That's what happened when I paid for one of the advanced levels offered by the church when I retired in privacy to go through the mystical actions which would liberate me into a higher state, after reading the instructions and starting to do the actions prescribed, I felt a rush of heat and perspiration course through my body from the realization that I had just been had.

It is ironic that the expected end result of the process is an astounding realization, followed by an extraordinary sense of relief, which is in fact what I felt when I realized I had been conned!

The lesson from the Master, be it Hubbard, Jesus, Sun Moon, or Lao Zi was very clear.

Go thee forward and make thyself thine own master.

baldhawk

Tom Cruise has lost it as far as I am concerned, but this is only "my" opinion. I never really liked him as an actor, although I have watched a couple of his movies. It seems that actors have more appeal to the public in getting messages across, so for Scientology this is a good advertising campaign for them. However, each one of us has the "right" to chose or not to chose what to believe. Everyone has a choice whether they want to offer their help to strangers or not, and even if we don't, doesn't make us a bad person, as Tom reflects. What Tom Cruise was talking about in this video is obviously his dedication to this cult, yet really not describing it in detail. He was very vague to say the least - talking in unconnected thoughts. He made the statments that some say they are in but aren't. If you are going to get on and talk about something you believe in, talk about it versus hiding behind a mask of knowledge (??)and not making sense; stating just open-ended thoughts that don't connect. If you are going to do a video and have a captaive audience, you want to teach and sell to them, not leave them hanging as to what you are really trying to say or confuse them. Tell people on the video what scientology is all about so they can rationally make up their mind for those who don't know or want to know. It is obvious Scientology is a "cult" and a way of "controlling others" versus really helping others. It is interesting that actor, John Travolta who is also involved in Scientology really doesn't reveal to the public how he feels. Tom Cruise has a constant need to fill his ego as being the best! Someone needs to squash him a little to get him back in touch with reality!

minuspa

hmm... i must say not all are truely blessed / cursed, to really know see feel what is real in the human state. as an actor i can imagine in a real world of tradgedy you are not a part of it is easy to feel imasculated or otherwise helpless. We as individuals are hoplessly helpless against the human condition as we all take part in our fatal error, we live imperfect lives. He seems honestly sold on making a difference much as a soldier in a platoon made a difference in WWII. Only difference was the soldier had a clear and present threat to focus on and our inherent human condition is so much more elusive. Well i wish him well and luck, honestly i am a combat veteran and only in such close collision of human trauma and loss do i think anyone can really "know" the sad state of horror we provide ourselves, known as the human condition. . . . I say if you'd like to make a difference then join the peace corps and deliver food to the hungry, or even pass out blankets and bread to those around the corner from you under the bridge.

mOnstr

You know, Scientology is friggin' batshit like someone else in these comments said, but most of what Cruise talks about in this video isn't that weird. What struck me about is that he's dedicated to action to affect positive change. Now the change he's talking about is again, totally batshit, but the attitude is of someone dedicated, committed and tired of watching the vast majority sit by and allow terrible things to happen in their names. Like he says, "the spectators need to get on the playing field or out of the arena."

To my mind, getting onto the playing field means opposing something like scientology, but the sentiment is accurate as I sit here and see people allow their government to do things that most people oppose; at least if you read opinion polls. If only friggin' idiot that Cruise is would champion something worthwhile and the real popular movements would have a pretty charismatic fighter ;)

brheault

Having read Viktor Franl's famous book called "Man's Search for Meaning", I can see a guy who believes deeply in a movement he believes is meaningful for him. The scary part of course, is that he has "drunk the koolaid" and is deluded into thinking that his is the "one best way" and that others are lost.- Wait, sounds like some other world religions- lol. And I'm a faithful Roman Catholic, but eschew any belief that some are saved and the rest damned. Let's just hope this bizzare cult-like doctrine espouses the "golden rule". On second thought, I'll pass on having Tommy C stop and help me in an accident. I'll take my chances with the paramedics.

Danno007

I was working for IRS in Peoria, IL when this travesty calling itself a religion was formed. IRS there naturally tried to stop its designation as a religion and tax free organization. The details of the "doctrine" were laughable. I will say the group has made its presentations more slick, but its still a bunch of hooey. At that time the beginners hooked up to a "tin can" device and got "cleared". I believe it is truly dangerous, unlicensed persons conduction psychoanalysis. The successful people who claim Scientology brought them success could have accomplished the same thing by thinking positively and working hard. There is nothing spiritual about Scientology and only the most naive or the most self serving cons could possibly buy it.

hectorsgirl

I'm sure the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are still waiting for all of Tom's help. And the women of Dafur are waiting for his help from the janjaweed when they are running for their lives hoping not to be raped or murdered while out looking for firewood. Where's all those solar cooking kits that would save the women of Dafur from going outside the camps to look for firewood in the first place, Tom? That sounds like help to me. Or water irrigation and sanitization kits for rural villages throughout third world countries so they can have clean drinking water and reduce the infant/child/elderly mortality rates due to dysentery and diarrhea?

Since this video was made, what measurable help has Tom made to improve this world?? What world crisises have been improved because of Tom's direct interventions?

Didn't know that Scientology trained them to be paramedics or EMTs so that they were the only ones to assist at the scene of an accident. Stand back people, that's you cops and 1st responders, call the Scientologists 1st, be sure to have the 911 dispatchers to put them on speed dial.

I've had many patients with delusions before but none so pronounced as this. He's carrying the load. He sure is carrying a load, and it's called BS.

I've read all the comments here and been thoroughly entertained. I'm sure there are striking writers lurking here. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time.

To set the record straight, anyone can believe what they want and call it religion. Heck in India, they believe cows and rats are sacred and build temples for them. Get off the video games and watch some National Geographic or Travel Channel and learn something for a change. Here in the good olde USA, we have freedom of religion, so if Tom Cruise wanted to worship a rat or cow, he has the freedom to do so. If we think he's batshit for doing so, that's us exercising our freedom of speech. So stop harrassing others for mentioning our Constitutional rights.

Furthermore, L. Ron Hubbard didn't invent Scientology. He may have been a sci fi writer. But the true "inventer" of Scientology was Mary Baker Eddy in 1879, when she founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, later called Christian Scientist. He may have taken her ideas and re-shaped them into his. Her revolutionary ideas about spirituality and health, she named Christian Science. These ideas are contained in her major work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, was first published in 1875. In 1908, she launched The Christian Science Monitor, which became a leading international newspaper. Do your research, people.

But then why waste time saying all this when people should know that scientology was founded by a cut rate sci-fi scribbler named L Ron Hubbard who once quipped that if you ever want to make a quick million, just start a new religion (i.e. DRUG) well, Tom-boy is obviously clinically hooked and needs deprogramming just like any Moony.

bionicmisfit

I have to say that I have always loved TC, however, I have never loved Scientologist. I have an opportunity to study with them because it is a requirement of employment with them. I was a slave, making slave wages and had their lunatic beliefs thrust upon me. Needless to say I did only momentarily because it was necessary to maintain that job for the fifteen minutes I had it. I love TC's art, but his beliefs are pure idiotic and the rant he made on this video shows you how believing that crap can drive you over the edge. Katie must think she is living with Amin. I feel bad for those children and I really feel ashamed for TC. When I see them (Scientologist) on the street passing out their pamphlets, I not only decline but I tell them: " Not only do I not want it, I cannot believe they have brainwashed you into passing this garbage out. I have read 3 of Hubbards books and each one is crazier than the last. They hook people with basic psycological ideals that most people should know to be true and them fly you to the moon on the stardust they sell.

I wonder how much knowledge exactly most of the people posting these critiques actually are going off of in their instant evaluations. First of all, this video pretty much said NOTHING. It was full of complete and utter vagueries that don't rightly allow a careful thinker to conclude much of anything on the matter. After the so-called "indoctrination video", I'm left completely ignorant of just what "doctrine" was supposedly expressed. As a Christian myself, I can identify quite easily with being judged as a nutjob or an ignoramous by those who have no idea what the Bible actually teaches. Perhaps instead of immediately taking the podium, the general public should first take a seat in the classroom. I am not in any way saying that I am a supporter of Scientology belief, but if you're going to dismiss a human being (notice the weight of that idea alone), celebrity or invisible, as a lunatic, make sure you actually have a (reasonable) reason for it. The masses are dangerous when they're stupid.

lurchbyrep

If Scientology can really work this kind of magic, then how come it's embraced by so few and loathed by so many. Where is the proof? Where is the documented evidence that these methods really work? Oh, whoops, there is none... because if we tell everyone that we believe in Xenu and that we are the descendants of thetans, that is a sure-fire way to suppress positivity towards the (not church) "Organization". It certainly wasn't with Lisa McPherson, L Ron's wife or Son or even good 'ole bullshitter LRH himself. And let's not for a moment forget that Tom Cruise is a professional actor, how hard is it for him to come across as convincing. And believe me it is with utter despair I make that comment because prior to his mental breakdown, I really respected the guy. You know, if they really wanted to promote Scientology as a solid foundation for improving humanity, they would alter their tactics against those that speak out against the church. Let's be honest, an insecure person spends more time on the defensive than the offensive. When is the last time we saw Scientology on the offensive?

Stay away from Scientology, stay away from Scientologists, stay away from Dianetics, stay away from Tom Cruise, stay away from Scientology propaganda and find a faith or belief with a dedicated history and a sane support group. And preferably one that won't eventually land you in the poor house, the nut house or worse... DEAD!

Take care of yourselves, everyone!

GypsySlide

Minx: Nothing wrong with being self-serving. I'd argue that true happiness begins and ends with self-awareness in all its various forms (regardless of whether you blur your identity with some semblance of "I am you"). That having been said, rational self-interest and other philosophies similar to what you are alluding to do not require that people purchase the right to such knowledge, nor do they (generally) stem from a science fiction writer's inane ramblings.

I know many people are confused by Mr. Cruise's use of the English language. That is because Scientology "loads the language". Loading the languange is using a word, or words that mean something only to the people in the cult. I used the word cult because that is simply what Scientology is. The use all 7 steps used in brainwashing while "educating" their followers. This video proves how delusional they are. Scientology appeals to impressionable people who are not stupid. They read Dianetics and believe they have found some greater truth. Unfortunately there is not one original idea in the entire work. Read Aristotle, Plato, The Bible, The Koran..., then read this book. Do any of Mr. Hubbards ideas soud familiar, they should. It is scary, more so because it is on almost every college campus where kids are impressionable, and away from family. Hopefully this will enlighten America and it will begin the demise of this cult.

crassus1

We also never hear stories about him donating money to needy children or going to third world countries like Brangelina. And I totally agree with the comment above about him and Katie being robots.

I like Tom Cruise and his movies. But I also know that he couldn't be more on the wrong track than he is now. If, like Tom, you ever get involved with a person or group that says they have the answers, run the other way as fast as you can.

In the history of the world, the people who have caused the most problems are those who thought they had a pipeline to the truth. And those folks want to help you see the truth, but only they possess the tools and insight to help you--but what they really want is for you to see their truth, not your own.

It's kind of a shame Tom got ensnared in this nonsense. However, as with other fundamentalist types (and make no mistake, committed Scientologists are just another group of fundamentalists), they have to go through this experience to learn what doesn't work.

So Tom, if you're reading this, have fun and know that if you're lucky, one day you'll wake up and see this foolishness for what it is, and you'll be able to move on and be a heck of a lot happier person than you are now.

JohnWoods

Hahaha, wow and he's not even high!

Unfortunately, Tom Cruise is just as crazy as the rest of the religious fanatics, for any religion. He's just singled out because he's a celebrity. However, it's completely ridiculous for him to actually believe he's the only one who can help. Being a giving, loving and caring person is everyone's responsibility, not just the Scientologists. Not to mention - any religion that gives an exlusive mansion called the Celebrity Center creates an atmosphere of being unequal... shouldn't everyone under a religion be considered equal? And spending tons of money on advancing is another outrageous notion... I guess it's easy to be such a great follower when you're rolling in money.

Tom, you're out of touch with reality. If you were really smart, you would realize these positive feelings of giving and education for the well-being of all people can come from within, not from religion. The space ship has landed, go phone home and shut the fuck up already.

mistermedley

this is beyond sad.
tom cruise has fallen so bad, it's not even funny anymore. now, i only turn 16 in a month but at least i know what i stand for and that life isn't a candy coated world and destiny doesn't just come when we call, it just happens.
for anyone who'd like to know what scientology is..
scientologists believe that a very long time ago there was a lord zeelon or zelor or some other sci-fi name with a 'Z'. now this lord what's-his-face captured all the aliens and killed them. but after they were killed, their souls rose up to the so-called heavens. but the lord z-something was prepared for this and had a 'soul catcher' built and captured all the alien souls. he then put all the souls in a chamber and brainwashed them with clips of religions and so on. he then set them free and they entered the bodies of neanderthals. and thats how we believe what we believe today. if you ask me.. thats absolute BS!
but hey, everybody has the right to an opinion. and to the right of speech.
but really. romp? play? say what?! this guy beats wacko jacko by far! if this guy contributed HALF the nannies and maids to single mothers with three jobs around the world, mabey, just MABEY the world would be a better place and there would be a little criminals on this earth.
it sure is frightening to see such a great man fall from grace. to think.. am i gonna end up like that someday? having the dream to become an actress. i mean, the man used to be star. he used to be such a hottie. but this. this scientology speech and jumping about on oprah's couch, that just makes him so unattractive. my heart goes out to that child of his. poor poor suri. well, this concludes my essay length 'comment'. ahahahaha heee hahahahahaHEhehahahaHA hehehehhahahaha!

ivy22

@Leiakat: OK, a fairly good over-view of "What Wrong with Tom?" Years ago, I actually knew a Scientologist (for him it started with being a science fiction fan in L.A.) who was Clear (as he put it. After a few years Jack still had enough sense to quit. Science fiction authors who knew Lafayette Ronald Hubbard personally told of conversations they had during writers' meetings in the late 1940s where he brought up the idea of religion as a con game (and one that was in fact created by a con artist, Jehovah's Witnesses.) He also alluded to the "fact" of "out-of-body" experiences while undergoing surgery in the Navy (during which he had been pronounced "dead".) This is supposedly where he got the idea of the Thetans, etc. However, if you read some of his pulp fiction (particularly the fantasy stories, rather than the SF), you'll note in FEAR (a novella) and others, the idea of Hyper-realities, etc. If Mr. Cruise hadn't been (I suspect) so frightened of seeing a real therapist during his early acting career, I doubt if he would've "sucked" into Scientology. I suppose he was frightened that his fans (& employers) would think he was mentally unstable (even then.) Of course, what do many people think now?

trendart

Third Rate sci-fi author worship? That's where we are now? I didn't know how far this all went until recently. I thought it was basically a Tony Robbins type cult of people in need of self-help methods. Then I read the whole Xenu thing and now This?! They actually call him LRH? Wow, apparently a celebrity's need to feel special knows no bounds and is the perfect way to control them. Tom Cruise is a fucking scientology automaton because they give him a big ass medal and special "treatments" and a peek at the super-secret third grade level writings of a lunatic. I'm blown away. I'm starting a religion just for celebrities next week. They'll apparently fall for anything, I'll be a billionaire in no time.

AxisDrummer

oh
my
GOD.
and could someone tell me what the fuck he is TALKING about? that guy's not on scientology. that is just some seriously mind-blowing WEED.
i have had that EXACT conversation with my toaster oven once waiting for toast to come out after i smoked a bowl of some killer weed. i sat there and i just could not complete a sentence but, by god, my toaster oven understood me. and when i got done telling my toaster oven all i knew about the universe, you know what it did? it produced a piece of fucking toast, by god! just made this little DING noise and when i reached in there, there that little piece of toast sat EXACTLY WHERE I HAD PLACED A PIECE OF BREAD JUST 2 MINUTES BEFORE! or, wait, was it 20 minutes before? or maybe two hours, hell i don't know - but the point is this: if you get really fucking high - and i mean REALLY high - you know the kind i'm talkin' about - so high that if you went for a walk, you couldn't find your way back to your own front door 20 minutes later - but you wouldn't care because you wouldn't be able to remember that you had LEFT your house and you wouldn't remember where you were GOING, or even what you just thought to yourself two mother-fuckin' SECONDS ago... so let's say you're this high and you're in your kitchen and you think "damn i sure would love some toast right now" and you put that bread in the toaster oven because last time you had toast, you SORT of remember something about it coming out of that square shiny silver thing...so there you are with your bread in the toaster oven and you start talking out loud. not to anybody in particular because you're home alone anyhow. but talking out loud sort of makes you feel normal for a second because you like the sound of your own voice and it seems familiar to you. so you're talking now, because, of course, you can't remember the point at which you STARTED talking, so you're probably in mid-sentence and you stop and think "what the fuck was i just talking about?" and then you think "i smell toast." and your eyes feel all heavy and burnt and itchy at the same time so you say something to the toaster oven about your eyes but that just confuses you so you try and remember why it is you're talking and all of a sudden you realize you sound JUST LIKE TOM CRUISE IN THAT WEIRD-ASS VIDEO YOU SAW ON THE INTERNET! and you know what? you're probably right. in your high-as-a-kite state, you have this HUGE epiphany that if you smoke enough dope, sit in front of your toaster oven and talk about nothing and sort of everything at once that you're making about as much sense as tom fucking cruise when he talks about whatever that religion thing is that he's involved in. and you know what happens next? the toaster goes DING! and your toast is ready. damn, is that deep, or WHAT?

heydeejay

I read the so-called controversial Andrew Morton book, found it very balanced and fair, but also telling it like it really is. Now, whether Morton spoke to any current Scientologists when writing this book or not is a moot issue, because the ones that were willing to be quoted that were once in the cult all seemed to say the same thing-that it's an extremely sinister organization, they spy on people, wire tap phones, intimidate and ruin anyone they perceive as a threat or against their cause and ideals. Cruise carefully was selected and targeted to be their highest profile spokesman. He is now spiting this garbage and can't seem it understand why people are fed up with him. His popularity took a 40% nosedive-which is why Sumner Redstone kicked him to the money curb. Notice that John Travolta keeps a much lower profile than Cruise? You never hear him spouting off about how great Scientology is. Travolta is much smarter than Cruise in this respect. No one seems to be irritated with him being a member. I found the book to be very informative, logical and insightful. And I was one a huge Cruise fan. I still think he's a very good actor, however, he has allowed this obsessive passion to impact his career negatively. Scientology would actually be better served by him keeping his misguided thoughts to himself. His self-arrogance and superiority is apparent and people are very turned off, thus, they now pass on his films, and that hits the bottom line. Folks who have even the slightest curiosity about Tom Cruise and why he is now off his rocker should read it. It clearly explains why Cruise thinks he exists on a plane far above other mortals. Sad.

LexLufa

Fortunately, I didn't have the tens of thousands of dollars they wanted to go 'clear'. I think i did level 1, but hey, it's all a blur.

Stuff him into a volcano and blow him back where he came from. "An Et named Xenu was supposed to have gathered up all the overpopulation in this sector of the galaxy, brought them to Earth, stuffed them into volcanoes, and then exterminated them using hydrogen bombs. The souls of these murdered people are then supposed to infest the body of everyone. They are called "body thetans". On the advanced levels of Scientology a person "audits out" these body thetans telepathically by getting them to re-experience their being exterminated by hydrogen bombs. So people on these levels assume all their bad thoughts and faulty memories are due to these body thetans infesting every part of their body and influencing them mentally. Many Scientologists go raving mad at this point if they have not done so already." I think TC has reached this level.

jjana

Weird. Just simply weird.

There are some great docs on Scientology out there. One, BBC production called Panorama, was great... exposed the 'church' leaders for the crap they get up to in order to supress by fear.

Link here: [video.google.com]

Wikipedia has a great explanation of the origins of this nutty sci-fi book gone live.
[en.wikipedia.org]

It is funny, but not surprising the number of 'celebridiots' who are attached to this weird CULT, including the not-as-larger-than-life Kirsty Alley... all seem to be quite surprised by the information that their 'religion' is founded on a science fiction novel about an alien invasion about 75,000 years ago...

Although they'd like to deny and surpress this info, the book, Dianetics, has a graphic (poor quality to be sure) of a volcano, where, according to L. R. was where all these aliens were sacrificed... this is after the sky god Xenu, found a location with 10 or more useable volcanos.... and then flew the poor outcasts there on DC-8 like craft....

CRAzY People for sure.

If you're wondering where Tom learned to ramble on so eloquently, take a look at this quote from Ron L. himself:

"Well, I know this: that onto this planet there's a great deal of dumping has gone on. Stuff from the nearby galaxy -- not this galaxy but from the next galaxy over and so forth, is going on here. I know they take political prisoners and guys who they don't want around, but it's less personal than you think. They just have excess population so they start to get rid of their excess population, you see? They've got a revolt, or you're on the wrong side of a war, or something like that, and they pick you up in droves, and ice-cube you and throw you into a sea someplace.
I know this planet has been subjected to that and several planets in this immediate end of this galaxy have been subjected to that -- that I know."

momwithbrain

For the sake of argument, it looks like the vagueness in Cruise's rhetoric is not a mistake, but is rather quite deliberate. If Tom got too specific on examples of charity, heroism, and so on, he's risk being called on whatever specific thing he said that might be easy contradict. By staying vague, he's both protecting himself from naysayers (because they can't hit anything specific) AND appealing to prospective believers who'll likely find something appealing in the mass of vagueness - note the sense of empowerment, confidence, and vague feelings of goodwill towards humanity that he's projecting.
But there's little original about this. I have had some personal experience with a cult-like situation and I remember the vague arguments for the leader's supernatural powers I used to be told, over and over. They were vague enough that they were difficult to contradict logically but easy to embrace emotionally, as long as you didn't think too hard about them.
By the way, the numerous cuts and edits in this video may be exaggerating the vagueness by taking fragments out of context, at no complete fault of Cruise's.

Apple_Orchard

Here's an excerpt from somewhere... google and read for yourself.

"At sea the cruelty extended to children. On one occasion, [L. Ron] Hubbard was infuriated by a small boy who had unwittingly chewed a telex.

HANA ELTRINGHAM: "He put this 4½ year old little boy - Derek Greene - into the chain locker for two days and two nights. It's a closed metal container, it's wet, it's full of water and seaweed, it smells bad. But Derek was sitting up, on the chain, in this place, on his own, in the dark, for two days and two nights. He was not allowed to go to the potty. I mean he had to go in the chain locker on his own, soil himself. He was given food. And I never went near it, the chain locker while he was in there, but people heard him crying. That is sheer, total brutality. That is child abuse."

I am not that big of a Tom Cruise fan, but I am not sure why he is so "crazy" in this video? He clearly is heavily involved in something he is passionate about. If you watch the video and imagine he is talking about saving the environment, or perhaps even "reborn" and getting involved with a Christian religion, it wouldn't seem abnormal to anyone. He is simply excited and wants to share it with others, why is that so wrong? I kept waiting for him to to talk about aliens from the way this video was hyped up(and the annoying music loop). Personally, I am an atheist and do not look down upon others if they have a different belief system than my own. This just seems to be the exact same thing that any fanatical religious individual or advocate would sound like if they really cared about what they are talking about. As a culture, we expect our icons not to have a life of their own. Others on this board keep referencing his "roles". Come on! He is NOT those people no matter how much we want him to be. I am actually impressed he shares his life with the public instead of a typical Hollywood star who needs to stay private. Just keep in mind, if you ever become passionate about something (no matter how "crazy" it may seem) you don't want to have others throw stones at you.

ginhut

Coupl'a little glimpses into CruiseLand:

1. Neil Strauss's "The Game" (about pickup artists) has a very interesting chapter in which TC asks NS to do an interview of him based on his NYTimes article about the pickup world. Cruise basically tries to convert him (to no avail, Jehovah Be Praised!). The guy manifests all the hallmark behavior of the cult member, as this video demonstrates.

2. An absolutely brilliant essay by Sarah Vowell (of NPR fame) in her book called "The Partly Cloudy Patriot." In something like 8 pages, she nails TC completely. And it has nothing to do with Scientology, either. It's just a brilliant piece of interpretation based on his films. A must read.

Here's the question I would love Cruise to answer: What's your annual paycheck from the Church of Scientology? Of course, since they're a "religion," they don't have to tell anyone a word about it. C'mon Tom, what's your paycheck, dude?

getmethebutter

What is the big deal with this video? Not once did I think that Tom was acting crazy. I mean you are only seeing the answers to the questions and it seems like there is a lot of editing going on in this video. Who cares if Tom wants to believe in Scientology? It doesn't infringe on you or your beliefs in any way, does it? So leave the guy alone.

Also, I tried Scientology back in the 80's when I lived in N Hollywood. I worked my arse off for a week and they paid me $30 for about 60 hours of work and told me that the bulk of my earnings went to the greater cause and as I worked my way up I would make more.

some years ago i picked up the scientology bible, Dianetics...i just couldn't get into it. over the years, with all the hoopla about Cruise, I am interested in learning more, as it seems to be very secretive, it's hard to take a serious look at it, as someone might a valid spiritual/religious option. i've always liked Cruise, no matter the fair weather fans. he's entitled to believe whatever and have his own opinions. once upon a time people thought New Age and fringe thinking people were fruits, flakes and nuts. Now we've stopped throwing rocks and believe in spirituality more than ever before, we speak of zen, feng shui, buy beads, know a bit about other forms of thinking outside the box. Once upon a time people also thought the world was flat and that hosing down children on the streets of the South was just the way it was, and holding hands and singing Kumbaya was crazytalk. It would be better all around if Cruise would stop sabotaging what he believes to be an option, by downgrading it to a cult by the secrecy. There will always be critics. You can't hide and expect them to go away. The rule of law is that the more you hide, the more some seek, it's inversely proportional, and just as filled with mold if left in the dark. If Cruise is a leader, he's not acting like one. You don't have to run. Or be cowed by fear of being outwitted by scholars, you don't have even have to answer critics. If you believe, that's all you need. If a group can't step up and believe out loud, shut the hell up about making me a believer, or having faith in your group. I'm mostly agnostic, but not so arrogant as to believe people know everything we should know about everything in the universe. We can't possibly know, and we may never understand let alone articulate complexities. I can not tell you how the hell a plane stays in the air, but I take my seat just the same, and have faith. I don't know how some people are born twins and can be in sync with the other who's miles away. So if someone sat me down and tried to explain, I think I'd listen, even if I still did not understand, and had faith in some truths of what they said. Same thing with religion, whatever happened to religious tolerance and freedom of religion and expression? scientology might not be popular or the answer for everybody. apparently it is for some, and so what if it's not what someone else would choose for themselves. in the end maybe that's what free will is about. maybe there is no one "right" religion, answer or spiritual truth. something to believe in is anybody's call. you do not have to be particularly smart, scholarly or anything else, you can just believe, unapologetically. and you don't have to explain or defend yourself or your position to anybody, or fight on 'their' turf. you don't have to.
i've seen many people caught up in their own religion--hypocritical or not, scripted or not, fervor, fanatical and otherwise.
cruise is just like anybody looking for his answer(s), a way though life. meaning and purpose. fellowship. i don't care if he believes in martians, or the power of his convictions that the world needs help, and he's going to come up with his own way to be a part of the solution instead of part of the problem. Anyone or group that wants to be part of the solution to human conditions with acts of kindness or whatever, more power to them, not ridicule. In the end it's less about who's right or wrong or thinking outside the box, than who's trying to help.

dearpepe
