Before her tenure at Scribner, Ms. McGrath spent two years at Knopf, where she worked for Editor-in-Chief and Publisher Sonny Mehta. She graduated from Harvard University and worked as a researcher and reporter at Newsweek before entering book publishing.

PW has learned that Riverhead editor Sarah McGrath, who acquired Margaret Seltzer's Love & Consequences for Scribner but brought it with her to Riverhead, was involved in another book, in 2006, that was cancelled because of fabrications and plagiarism. The book, How to Wear Black: Adventures on Fashion's Front-line, was purportedly a memoir of Emily Davies's four years as a fashion writer for London's Times, and according to Publishers Lunch, it lifted the lid on "a surreal, luxurious and terrifying world of lavish gifts, fashionably skeletal obsessives and couture warfare." According to Lunch, Sarah McGrath bought the book for Scribner; the announcement was posted in mid-December 2005.

In March 2006 Galley Cat reported that the deal, "rumored to be up to $900,000 for U.S. rights alone," was struck down after a story in Women's Wear Daily outlined Davies's fabrications and plagiarism. Scribner cancelled Davies's contract and the NY Daily News quoted Scribner's Suzanne Balaban as saying "we've dropped" Davies's book.

It is not uncommon for book deals to fall apart somewhere between verbal agreement and contract signing (or publication.) and McGrath is likely one of many editors who have had several brushes with potential hoaxters. In the earlier case, the deception was found before the book entered the publication process. With Love and Consequences, Riverhead books acted quickly to admit the mistake and withdraw the books.

Since joining Riverhead, McGrath has edited a mix of fiction and nonfiction, including Slummy Mummy by Fiona Neill and Flower Children by Maxine Swann. McGrath did not return calls for comment.

Hamud, you are probably right on the lifting of ideas from those authors, reading on the corner with the proceeds from workin for Ronald MacDonald. Guess she's saving the Hamburglar for book #2.

Now that Airborne Cold remedy crap that Oprah touted lost a class action lawsuit. Can't wait to see her rip that schoolteacher apart on TV like James Frey.
If she only read this book, damn, still qualifies for the fiction club.

It's silly, I know, but encountering him on Peggy's website was like going to a party and meeting in person Daisy Buchanan from "The Great Gatsby," and hearing hear carry on in affectionate, supportive way about F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. Magical!

I guess the basic material of Peggy Seltzer's saga is so rich that it makes me kinda giddy. It just brings up so many culture cross-matchings and connections...like Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" album.

If we use Peggy's forray into "ethnic studies" as a starting point, I think we can begin to tease out a number of the influences that went into the creation of "Love and Consequences."

It's likely that Peggy was familiar with the work of Susan Straight, a white female writer who's pretty much made a career out of having married a black guy and having "integrated" herself into working-class black America.

It's also likely that Peggy read a lot of Louise Erdrich, the half-white, half-Native American author. (One of Erdrich's children, a son, accused Erdrich's husband of having sexually abused him.)

Finally, the Strong Black Mammy is such a pervasive fixture in American literature -- even Lillian Hellman claimed to have had one -- that it's difficult to pick a contender. My hunch is that Peggy took her cues from the Carson McCullers novel "The Member of the Wedding," or the film based on it.

I'm certain that folks trained in literary theory and criticism will be able to peer more deeply into Peggy Seltzer and "Love and Consequences" and discern even more rewarding connections.

Not in the same way that you "make" a joke.

I guess in Southern parlance you might say that Peggy "cooked herself up some black eye peas." At any rate, "make" is more colloquial than "prepare," don't you think?

I imagine that were Peggy true to form, she probably "made" black eye peas by first frying up some fatback or bacon and then maybe sauteeing some chopped onion in the grease. It all depends, really, on how Big Mom taught her to make black eye peas, or on how Madd Ronald preferred them.

This is a story that just keeps on giving.

I knew we were onto something quite sweet when we learned that the NYT reporter found Peggy in her kitchen, making black-eyed peas and cornbread.

Next we were fortunate enough to hear Peggy speaking in her crazed white-chick's imaginary black street dialect.

Since Peggy spoke in this remarkable fashion during radio interviews, it's safe to assume that Peggy also spoke this way to the NYT reporter who followed her around as she walked her pit bulls through her Eugene, Oregon neighborhood.

But it's when Sigerson pointed us to Peggy's web sites that the story left the "I Love Lucy" realm and began to pioneer in what can be described only as epic funkadelic realism.

I've come to love Madd Ronald even more than Peggy's rendering of her imaginary black street dialect.

We've entered a hall of mirrors where "Atomic Dog" plays loudly in the background.

Once watched a fascinating cross examination by a defense attorney that was all about whether the witness considered himself an O.G., mixed with all these insults for why he was really just a wannabe, mostly to get the witness so upset that he would break his calm.
