Emily isn't a big enough name for a shitty smear-tactic takedown like this.

AND. The misogyny is the bigger point, and so impossible to tackle because of how it reeks from every sentence. Cheap innuendo, lame attempted irony ("your most untrammeled writer" also the one who's allegedly fucking everyone? Ha, HA, so clever).

Both Josh Stein and Keith Gessen are apparently total whores but Denton portrays Emily as a slut for sleeping with men in the context of her relationships. She had a boyfriend for what, six years? And this is the girl who's using her vagina to climb the social ladder? Fucking spare me. And the schoolmarmish, pearl-clutching, pursed-lip line about the men at n+1 using "women as accessories"? Look at Julia Allison -- this site is no stranger to using women for their sex appeal either.

And I say that as a writer whose novels simply do not sell, but who wrote at least one book that people still email me about five years later.

Gawker, as awful and stupid as it can be, does not need the zine, but the zine sooo needs gawker. No one on the planet even thinks about it otherwise. No one else writes about it. Their head guy's first novel sold something like four times as many as mine--but that was still only 20,000 copies, and he got paid 25 times more than I did for the advance. Meaning? My publisher lost ten grand. Indecision's publisher, lost $250,000.

I guess my point is almost the same as Nick's, God save me. They are slimy little crawly people who want to savor an esteem they have not even remotely earned. Their "writing" is still only awesome to a very few people. I viewed her more as a bit of an enigma, someone with a skill for adopting a view and analyzing from a perspective in convincing prose. I also enjoy the flexibility of Emily Gould's morality. She's able to discard it entirely and just ANALYZE, which is scary good trait that we share. I'd want to hire her the minute she develops an interest in credit derivatives or arbitrage. I have a feeling from some of the tone of this piece that Nick badly wishes he still had the ability to harness her energies to his cause.

That said, I have a feeling that her "you're right because I'm sleeping with you" weakness is going to mean that her personal life is doomed to be a procession of trainwrecks and disasters. These events will make excellent blog material, but will make jobs difficult to keep at times. Nick, you've correctly identified the silliness of the reasons why she left your organization, but you have failed to successfully mask your bitterness. I have a feeling that you're genuinely bothered to have lost a talent like hers to something so stupid - it happens, it's not your fault, and taking her down a peg will probably only make you feel better for a little while.
