Well, VQR is really good, but The Georgia Review is better. Though I have no doubt that some sort of mag politics influences these choices, mags like The Georgia Review and VQR aren't nominated for that reason -- they made the cut because they're substantive and elegant and, well, friggin awesome. Somehow I doubt that political strings are being pulled from these magazines' home bases in Virginia and Athens, GA.

Everyone should root for these two underdogs, both of whom continue to prove with every issue what a genuine commitment to quality can produce. Moreover, everyone should subscribe to these two mags -- let's face it, the big boys don't need your money, but mags like these do. Both of them love their subscribers to an almost ridiculous degree.

@Helman: Weird, having never been in one before me and some friends just tried last weekend. We read Machiavelli's the Prince in honor of campaign season. It made me a lot more sympathetic to Hillary. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing, but at least it had nothing to do with SNL.

I'm pretty sure Us Weekly's "Stars, They're Just Like Us" and whatever mag does "Hunky to Chunky" do WAY more in the online service category than People's "Style Watch."

Harper's pretty consistently gives me a monthly wet dream, but then Naomi Klein could turn me straight so I'm not really an impartial observer.
