I remember the 89 tour. I went to a show at Madison Square Garden and while the venue was far too big, the thousands of Wall Street Wonders shedding their suits, shirts and ties to reveal a most wonderous display of Dead t-shirts worn underneath their corporate attire still gives me hope!!! Also, I saw dozens of shows upstate NY in the 80's at itty bitty arena's...........AHHHHH!!!!

Kind of wish there was a Gawker for heads. It's sad that we are the last generation that will truly know what it was like to see the Grateful god-damned Dead.

Seriously... being a Deadhead is rough, esp in this day and age. I loathe jam bands and that whole trustafarian gathering of the tribes nonsense. I will go see Phil simply because I need a dose of that Dead vibe 3 times a year and Ratdog just doesn't do it, but MAN what would I give for just one more intense night at Alpine Valley in August... sigh... In the meantime I'll be in Red Hook sucking down bong hits and listening to my Winterland 73 box set until my ears fall off. I miss Jerry...

@Botswana Meat Commission FC: I think it's actually the moon rising over the mountain, and some clouds making it look like a skull. Although I do like your interpretation.

Also, their "songs celebrated ... mind-altering drugs"? Which songs would those be? "Living on reds, vitamin C and cocaine" was "a shame", and Casey Jones didn't fare so well either. Am I missing something, or is the Times just using the easy stereotype? "The bus came by and I got on", maybe? There's no denying a cultural connection between the band and drug indulgence, but not in their songs so much.

@IntoAshes: Don't forget Bobby's shorts! Wear's them even in freezing NYC Feburary. Thankfully they have gotten longer in recent years past. I have a few DVD's that are semi-painful to watch due to his camel toe coochie cutters.

I'm hoping that these recent Dead updates (concert for Obama, and this kinda press stuff) may indicate they've finally settled their internal differences regarding downloads and royalties. And possibly forshadow a possible DEAD tour comming up (not just Lesh and Ratdog sold seperately).

Pretty please PLEASE cuz I miss the lot a whole hell of A LOT!!!

Having lived the glamorous life of a touring rock musician, I can endorse the pulling out from the merch box and wearing of one's own band shirt as a fallback tactic for when you haven't been able to do any laundry for two weeks and even you can't stand the reek from the clothes you've already sweated in multiple times. However, I would avoid that strategy if it meant that I'd be wearing a Grateful Dead shirt.

How can the Dead do this? Shouldn't the band be remembered only through the oral histories provided by fans who were totally tripping at the time of the events they relate? Do we really need to know about them in this kind of obsessive detail?

This archives thing has gotten way out of hand. People should be required to burn their papers and memorabilia from now on.

@Botswana Meat Commission FC: Yeah... the Dead sort of had their own rules and one of them was that the drummers always wore band shirts, presumably bc they sweat so much playing for 4+ hours. In the late 80s Bobby used to wear a Madonna shirt with the neck cut out and played a hot pink guitar. Don't even try to figure it out...
