I really miss the guy who used to be on the A train all the time who had the horse costume that he made out of old foam mattresses with sweatpants for legs and sneakers tied to the cuffs for "hooves."

Also...there's that homeless guy who hangs out by MacDougal who shines people's shoes with his bare hands for only $2.

A couple of years ago, I was having a cigarette outside Off the Wagon, and he offered me a shoe shine. I declined, by another patron of the bar who was also having a cigarette insisted that this guy gave the best shoe shines around, and that they were so good, he would not only pay the $2 for my shoe shine, but gave the homeless man an extra $5 tip. I couldn't say no to such an offer, so I let him shine my shoes (which were actually my beloved Doc Martin boots). Sure enough, he breaks out the shoe polish, pours it right into the palm of his hand, and goes to work on my boots. Did a pretty good job overall, but the fucker got polish all over the yellow threads that hold the soles. They haven't been the same since :(

FitnessMadeSimple

What about the guy that puts up his own artistic displays on the FDR at about 116th or so? He is always topical and generally uses items (dolls, bike wheels, busted furniture, spackle buckets, etc.) in some artsy way to convey a message important to him? Every once in a while, you'll see him sitting among the art, he waves to cars when you honk. He always puts up a sign to wish everyone a happy holiday (which ever one is current) and always spells the holiday wrong. NYT wrote about him a while back...

sassypants

Have you all ever seen the rubber band bum? he used to always be in Nolita. He would cover his entire body first in plastic bags, not garbage but deli or grocery size. He would hold these in place by rubber bands, like hundreds of them. The overall effect was plastic-y future stay puff marshmellow man.

Also, one of my other favorites is the man I dubbed "Goth Ben Franklin". He lives in Williamsburg and to my surprise and delight, I found out what he does for a living one night. Apparently he coat checks at Studio B.

werewolf

And Gary, the "mayor" of Strawberry Fields, was really upset by his flower

Both very bizarre.

His fuel being money of course!

Allison571
