Speaking of wishful thinking, I have seen Obama's plan that you linked up. It's sadly naive and is one of the reasons I am not that excited about him anymore. All it shows off is his miniscule voting record and lack of knowledge of how this country works. You do realize that something like only 1% of this list/plan would ever be possible? Rereading the healthcare section almost made me laugh. The paper to electronic database part actually did.

I am not saying Clinton or McCain would be any better, and I don't plan on voting for either of them. It really isn't a good situation anyway you look at it. The EU is looking better and better. Well, except for Austria. No one wants to be locked in a dungeon for 20+ years.

He has in fact defined what he'll do, but please, keep on pushing the "He just gives speeches!" line, even though the evidence doesn't bear it out, while simultaneously suggesting that Obama supporters are the ones who need to get a grip on reality. Also, if you can find me a bunch of speeches from Clinton that weren't largely composed of platitudes, that would be awesome, and surprising. Campaign speeches tend to be pretty platitudinous, because for some reason, the people watching on television turn off speeches that focus on the intricacies of tax reform. Weird.

Clinton runs the risk of earning McCain a lot more "hate votes," as you put it, because (1) she's come off as a lot more Rovian than Obama has, and has consequently pissed a lot of people off, (2) she hasn't even begun to reach out to Obama supporters, while he's already talking about uniting the party, and (3) she's lost the black vote, which a Democrat more or less needs to win the general election. Obama's chances at this point of winning over the working-class voters who support her are infinitely better than her chances would be of getting back black voters, especially if she manages to somehow wrest the nomination from him at this point (which will not happen).

As for the slime machine -- well, he had a tough week or so with the Rev. Wright, and he came out barely scathed. His "No, I won't be as huge an asshole to you as you are to me, and instead I'm going to appeal to the brains of the voters" method, while difficult for many people to understand, seems to serve him well. And the notion that a Clinton, of all people, is better off facing the slime machine is optimistic, to put it euphemistically. Even if their closets are empty now (which frankly seems unlikely to me), there's a whole pile of fun stuff from the '90s to revisit!

I don't hate her, but it's just getting really old, hearing that he's unelectable and that he needs to close the deal, when, as Nicka puts it, he keeps getting more votes. I will grant that, even though I think Obama will win the general, it might be a close race. I will not grant that it would be any less close with Clinton as the nominee. The numbers just don't bear that out.

As to those who doubt Obama's electability, I refer them to the record turnout of primary voters who have swamped the Republicans in number and to the very fact that he is ahead in the Democratic primary by all the mathematical metrics (pledged delegates, total popular vote, number of states won, etc.). I would think being the front-runner in a primary would be a fairly good indication that you can convince people to vote for you.

He also has an impressive array of educated and respected people endorsing him (Lee Hamilton, Robert Reich, Caroline Kennedy, etc.), who I would think place a great deal on substance as well as style.

As the front-runner now, its easy to forget Hillary came into this with a war chest of donations, a 25-point lead nationally (among blacks too), the "inevitability" moniker, and national name recognition. It was essentially her race, and Obama overcame the seemingly insurmountable odds by being more than a pretty face (not to mention the challenges of the race thing).

We have nothing to fear but fear itself...and those ladies supporting Hillary with the stickers on their heads. [shiver]

The age thing is going to be huge, as it always is, as it was with John Kennedy and as it was with Bill Clinton. The debates are going to work in Obama's favor, too, because he's a much better speaker than McCain. And "young, smooth, and up for change" beats "old, curmudgeonly, and more of the same" nine times out of ten.
