Charlottesville, Va. police issued an arrest warrant for Jesse L. "L.J." Matthew Sunday evening on a misdemeanor reckless driving charge. Matthew was observed on security camera footage with 18-year-old University of Virginia student Hannah Graham the night she went missing. "I believe Jesse Matthew was the last person she was seen with before she vanished off the face of the Earth because it's been a week and we can't find her," Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo said a press conference Sunday.
Matthew has not been charged by police for Graham's disappearance. According to the Associated Press, Matthew arrived at the police station in Charlottesville Saturday with a group of family members and asked for a lawyer, leaving about an hour after arriving.
Police followed Matthew from the station, Reuters reports, allegedly leading police in a chase. Officers were forced to call off their tail, Long said, because Matthew was driving too quickly. "We engaged him and he fled in a vehicle," he told reporters.
According to security camera footage and eyewitnesses, Matthew was with Graham around 1 a.m. on Sept. 13 ordering drinks at a mall restaurant. Police executed search warrants last Friday to search and seize his car and apartment, and are awaiting results from forensic analysis of the vehicle.
"Somebody knows what happened to Hannah," John Graham, Hannah's father, said at the press conference Sunday. "We don't know who that is, but somebody knows what happened to Hannah."
