This is how you do it. Earlier today at a press conference regarding Senate Bill 42 and House Bill 177, which would expand Pennsylvania's hate crime law to include attacks based on sexuality and gender identity, the former bill's author, State Senator Jim Ferlo of Pittsburgh, came out as gay. He did it like this:
A 20-year-old Savannah State University student and cheerleader named Desiree was profiled on last night's episode of MTV's True Life, which was titled "I'm a Gay Athlete." In it, Desiree ostensibly came out to her mom Michelle and aunt Deena over lunch. It did not go well. This is about as worst-case scenario as it gets (I suppose only violence and/or outright rejection could make it worse).
This account of an affair between two men who played together on the Washington Redskins in the late '60s/early '70s is heartbreaking. It comes from the NFL Network's episode of A Football Life profiling player Jerry Smith, who remained publicly closeted for his entire life (Smith died of AIDS in 1986).
